Exhibition - Project for a Revolution, Vasarely and Architecture

To mark the 50th anniversary of the Vasarely Foundation in Aix-en-Provence in 2026, the exhibition "Project for a revolution, Vasarely and architecture" unveils the genesis of a building unique in the world: the Architectural Centre.

A true architectural testament bequeathed by the artist Victor Vasarely, this innovative space is described as the "Sistine Chapel of Op Art and Kinetic Art." Thanks to exceptional loans from prestigious institutions such as the Centre Pompidou, the FRAC Centre Val de Loire, and the Musée national Fernand Léger, the exhibition retraces Vasarely's visionary ambition to take art out of museums and integrate it into the heart of the city.

The public will be able to discover rare pieces illustrating this creative epic, such as Carlos Raúl Villanueva's studies for the University City of Caracas (circa 1950) or Yona Friedman's famous "Spatial City".

The exhibition explores a major dimension of the artist's work: the synthesis of the arts. For Vasarely, architectural integration was not merely aesthetic, but a profound social strategy aimed at transforming the very nature of the artwork to enrich everyone's daily life. Visitors will delve into the key episodes of this genesis: from the influence of the Bauhaus to the first integrations in Caracas in 1954, culminating in the captivating dream of the "Polychrome City of Happiness." This dialogue is enriched by projects from other emblematic figures of the movement, such as Mathias Goeritz and his Satellite Towers, or André Bloc's Habitable Sculptures, offering a comprehensive perspective on this 20th-century architectural revolution.

Until September 20, 2026, the Aix-en-Provence Tourist Office is celebrating Victor Vasarely and the Foundation with a free exhibition. As a special anniversary gesture, the Tourist Office's events department, which organizes the Rencontres du 9e Art Comics and Related Arts Festival every spring, is offering visitors a 12-page illustrated journal created by Berlin-based artist Jakob Hinrichs. Presented as a graphic fable, the journal recounts the artist's childhood and reveals, through comics, how "Victor, the child with dragonfly eyes," became Vasarely, a pioneer of Op Art. Published in 15,000 copies, the journal is also available at the Foundation throughout the summer (while supplies last).
