How are visitors' ratings calculated?

On the pages of wineries, cellars and activities, you will see a rating out of 10 along with the number of reviews. Here is where it comes from and how to read it.

Where does the rating come from?

The rating is calculated by Fairguest, the online review analysis tool used by the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur regional tourist board. Fairguest gathers the reviews left by visitors on the main platforms, such as Google, TripAdvisor or Facebook, and turns them into a single rating out of 10.

Destinations Vins de Provence does not calculate or change this rating. It reaches us every day with the other details of each listing, through Apidae, the regional tourism database.

When is the rating shown?

We only show a rating when:

  • it is based on at least 10 reviews : below that, a rating depends too much on a handful of visitors;
  • it was updated less than 6 months ago, so that it reflects the welcome you will get today.

There is no minimum rating : any listing meeting these two conditions shows its rating, whatever it is. A listing without a rating is not a poor choice: it simply has too few recent reviews.

How to read the rating

  • 9 to 10: Excellent
  • 8 to 8.9: Very good
  • 7 to 7.9: Good
  • 4 to 6.9: Average
  • Below 4: Poor

The number of reviews and the date of the last update are shown under the rating. The more reviews, the more representative the rating.

When we know the exact address of the place's page on Google or TripAdvisor, a "Leave a review" button takes you straight there.

What does the breakdown by topic show?

For many listings, Fairguest also analyses what reviews say and rates separately the topics visitors talk about: the welcome, the setting, the experience, value for money, the rooms… Each topic is rated out of 10 from the reviews that mention it, positive and negative alike.

  • a topic is shown once at least 5 reviews mention it, with no more than the six most-mentioned topics;
  • lower-rated topics stay visible, in a dark colour: we do not show only the strong points;
  • the sentence “Visitors especially praise…” names the best-rated topics, with their number of positive reviews.

A topic can be rated lower than the overall score: a visitor who is satisfied overall may still regret one specific point. The breakdown also shows the number of reviews published on each platform. These figures are refreshed from Fairguest every night.

Are you a winery or a provider?

Your rating changes with the reviews your visitors post on Google, TripAdvisor and other platforms. To improve it, invite satisfied visitors to leave a review and reply to the reviews you receive. To show the "Leave a review" button on your listing, add the link to your Google or TripAdvisor page in your Apidae means of communication.
