The Castrum

Perched on a rocky outcrop, the medieval Castrum of Roquebrune-sur-Argens is the historic heart of the village. The fortified town developed around this ancient fortified house.

Perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Argens plain, the Castrum forms the historical heart of the village. As early as the 11th century, a fortified house occupied this strategic location and served as a refuge for the surrounding inhabitants in times of danger. Once there, the choice of location becomes easily understood: the commanding position allowed for observation of the surrounding area and the spotting of enemies from afar.

Over time, a veritable fortified town developed around this core, organized around the castle and the church. Transformed and then rebuilt in the 16th century, the residence became a presbytery in the 17th century before becoming a private property.

Although the ramparts and defensive structures are no longer always clearly visible today, traces of them can still be seen in the shape of the walls, the layout of the alleyways, and certain remains incorporated into the village houses. From the Chemin des Gardes, the view opens up broadly onto the Argens plain and the surrounding landscapes.
