The New Well
About
Fleeing the insecurity of the plains where they had settled for several centuries, the inhabitants settled around the 13th century on the hill where Gassin is currently located.
Water was scarce on this rocky outcrop, at an altitude of 200 meters. Several springs existed below the village: those of Arlatane and Bonne Fontaine in particular, but their remoteness only partially met the needs of men, animals and plants.
In the village, many inhabitants owned a cistern to collect rainwater. The well inside the fortified enclosure was the only communal water source. It was fed by runoff water but perhaps also by a spring.
The village's water supply problems were recurrent until the village's circuits were connected to a larger network in the 20th century.
Before that, the tower of the original castle, adjoining the presbytery, had been transformed into a cistern and a system allowed the village to receive water from the Bonne Fontaine spring in the 20th century.
This well, called the New Well, has been dated to the 17th century. Its existence is documented at the beginning of the 19th century. It has an internal diameter of 1.8 meters and is 7.4 meters deep.
