The two-thousand-year-old olive tree of the Master Winemakers of Gassin

The olive tree is one of Gassin's landscape features, along with the remarkable L'Hardy-Denonain garden, the rose garden, the Trois Pins (Three Pines) and the town's protected forests and natural areas. The olive tree has been present in the wild for several millennia: fossilized leaf remains dating back to 8000 BC have been found.
Olive cultivation developed with the establishment of Greek trading posts in Provence, including Athenapolis in the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, possibly in Gassin. The olive tree was, in fact, one of the attributes of the goddess Athena. It has therefore been cultivated in Provence for approximately 3,000 years. This tradition is perpetuated today in Gassin thanks to the Val de Bois estate.
