    L'essor commercial des années 1880 a fait apparaître une nouvelle bourgeoisie dont la richesse marque la physionomie architecturale de la ville.

    Merchants built ostentatious residences adjoining their warehouses and offices. Of all the villas erected in the 19th century, the most original is Château Armieux, now the courthouse. This medieval castle was built in 1905 by a wealthy soap merchant as a tribute to his wife.
