Memorial to the Martyrs of the Resistance

About

Located on the Pansard bridge at the entrance to the town, it was erected in May 1945. The names of three resistance fighters from Londe: Eugène Oswald, Louis Bussone and Pierre Rivault are engraved on it.

Eugène Oswald was born on August 14, 1925 in La Londe. His father, Jacques, was the village doctor. To escape the STO (compulsory work service), he fled and joined the famous and glorious maquis of the Ain.
During an ambush set for the occupying army from atop a hill, he and three other resistance fighters were spotted by the Nazis overlooking their position. The method for punishing the resistance fighters was strictly followed. After machine-gunning them in the legs, the Nazis rushed forward to finish them off. Eugène Oswald and two of his comrades from Haute-Savoie were killed. The fourth, from Ain, managed to crawl to a nearby wood and survived his wounds.
A stele bearing the name of Eugène Oswald and his two comrades is erected on the place where they perished in the commune of SONGIEU (01).
He was killed on July 13, 1944, he was about to turn 19.

Pierre Rivault was born on May 6, 1920 in Tours.
A worker at the Bormettes factory, to escape the STO (compulsory work service) he left the village by jumping out of a truck and joined the maquis.
Taken prisoner by the Nazis along with nine other FTPF (French Partisans and Irregular Fighters), he was tortured, horribly mutilated, and then shot with his comrades on the banks of the Asse de Blieux, a small stream located at a place called La Tuilière in the commune of Senez in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, on July 20, 1944, at the age of 24. His body, found in a mass grave, was not identified until 1945, and his name was recorded in the civil registry of this small commune.
A square in the Bormettes district bears his name.

Louis Bussone was born on July 30, 1919 in La Londe.
French Resistance fighter (FTPF). Upon hearing of the arrival of American and French soldiers who landed on the Provençal coast on August 15, 1944, he sabotaged the firing mechanism on the Maravenne Bridge. He then attempted another sabotage of the device that German soldiers had installed to destroy the Pansard Bridge during their retreat.
Surprised by an enemy patrol, he was shot near the cooperative winery on August 17, 1944, at the age of 25, as the first American and French soldiers approached the village.
