Orientation table: Castellas Cross

On a hill opposite the village stands a large metal cross. At its base is a viewpoint indicator offering a panoramic view of the village of Barjols, its rooftops, and the surrounding landscape.

Between 1768 and 1790, the first wooden cross was erected. Unfortunately destroyed by the elements, it was replaced in 1915 by an iron cross. In turn, it suffered from the weather and was eventually destroyed by fire in 1962.

In 1964, three dynamic young residents, attached to this iconic landmark, proposed to Father Barbéris that it be restored. He accepted, and thus a cross 6 meters high and 3 meters wide was erected on August 19, 1964, the twentieth anniversary of the liberation of Barjols.

In 2014, the cross was restored (stripping, brushing and painting) on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the liberation of Barjols by the 3 companions from Barjols who volunteered.
