Tower of the fort

Cette tour est le dernier reste du fort médiéval primitif de Gassin. De taille modeste, elle fut créée pour la défense de ce site choisi pour son inaccessibilité et sa vue dégagée, pour prévenir razzias sarrasines et attaques d'autres seigneurs.

The Gassin tower possesses certain characteristics typical of medieval military structures in Provence. This is particularly true of the rough-hewn stones visible on the walls. These local limestone blocks are roughly hewn and had the advantage of being easily handled.
After the pacification of the region, the tower was converted into a cistern to meet the significant water needs of the village.
