The Calvary of the Château le Pas du Cerf
About
The only wayside cross in the town, it represents a Christ in metal painted grey, crucified on a granite cross decorated with ivy, erected on a quadrangular concrete base.
Originally made of wood and destroyed by fire, this wayside cross was built in 1958 to commemorate the past of the Château Pas du Cerf estate, which once housed the Carthusian monks of La Verne during their retreats. According to local tradition, carters, who easily got stuck in the mud in this area, would whip it while saying "noun de dieu" in Provençal. The current Christ figure, brought back from Brittany by a friend of the Gualtieri family, owners of the estate, was blessed during a ceremony followed by a meal for farm workers and neighbors.
This is one of the rare examples of a monument dedicated to Christ, the Marian vocation being paramount in our region.
