The Castle of the Emperor
A historical emblem of Salon-de-Provence, this imposing medieval fortress built on the Puech rock was once the residence of the archbishops of Arles and the Holy Roman Emperors. A listed historical monument, this fortified castle now houses the Army Museum, an annex of the Musée des Invalides in Paris, which displays a remarkable collection of uniforms and weapons from French military history, from the Ancien Régime to the First World War.
The House of Nostradamus
This house-museum offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into the world of this enigmatic Renaissance figure… In the very home where the famous astrologer and physician lived from 1547 until his death, you will find a series of interactive reconstructions that retrace the stages of his life. You can also discover his study where he is said to have written his famous prophecies.
The Soapmakers' Quarter
Take some time to stroll through this neighborhood, a testament to the city's economic golden age. Since 1752, it has been the second largest center for the production of the famous Marseille soap, thanks to the region's many olive trees that provide the oil necessary for its manufacture. Admire the elegant townhouses whose facades tell the story of this prosperous era, as well as the two traditional soap factories still in operation: Rampal Latour and Marius Fabre.
The century-old Rampal Latour soap factory
Established in Salon-de-Provence since 1907, the Rampal Latour soap factory welcomes you to its workshops year-round. The factory offers free tours of its two production sites: the historic factory and the modern one. The guided tour will lead you to discover the Rampal Latour expertise, which dates back to 1828, and the craft of master soap makers through the ages. Welcome to the extraordinary world of this soap factory, where tradition rhymes with innovation, and authenticity with respect for people and nature.
The Marius Fabre Centenary Soap Factory
Over 124 years of history, four generations of the family, and cauldrons still intact and in use… The Marius Fabre soap factory, still in operation, produces genuine Marseille soap and black olive oil soap using the ancestral methods passed down by Marius Fabre. The production workshops can be visited free of charge, as can the Marseille Soap Museum, located in the heart of the soap factory and retracing the history of Marseille soap.
