Holy Cross Chapel

About

  • Not for viewing

Located at the very top of the village, this chapel was rebuilt in 1681 on the ruins of the original church, which had been demolished during the Wars of Religion in 1579. It was consecrated by Pierre Cabasson, parish priest of Pierrefeu, in 1682 and entrusted to the Confraternity of White Penitents in 1719. On July 2, 1826, a new bell was blessed and placed in the bell tower. Most of the interior furnishings and decoration date from the 19th century.

Perched on its rocky outcrop, listed as a historical site in 1943, this former seigniorial chapel dominates the plain and offers visitors a breathtaking 360° view.

The site hosts the chapels music festival in April and for the May 1st celebration, a Mass in Provençal takes place there.

Nearby, an olive tree, a symbol of victory, wisdom, fidelity, and abundance, stands on the ruins of the old castle. From 1150 to 1200, noblewomen and troubadours cultivated a veritable court of love, complete with its own refined rules. The site preserves the memory of the ladies who graced it: Rostangue, Lady of Pierrefeu, and Mabille de Fos, Lady of Signes. Walkers and lovers alike have adopted this olive tree as their symbol, tying colored ribbons to it in the hope that their wishes will come true.
